You don’t need any introduction for the VLC Media Player. It is one of the most popular, open sourced and most downloaded media player. VLC Media Player can play any video format, and support a wide range of subtitle format (Like.Art, .Sub, .Ret). VLC Media Player allows you to stream and download YouTube and other video.

It’s not very hard to find subtitle online for movies or TV-series, but you can save a lot of time with VLC media player. VLC media player extension called “VLsub” automatically find best subtitles for you.

How to Download and install the VLsub in VLC Media Player?

Step 1: Download the VLsub file from the Github page or the VLC add-ons page. Extract the ZIP format and you will see the “Vlsub.lua” file in extracted folder.

Step 2: If you don’t have VLC Media Player you can download and install in a computer. I’ll guide you how to install VLsub on VLC. First of all copy the “Vlsub.lua” file and paste in under “lua” folder in different OS.

  • For Linux, the extension folder is at ” ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/”. (Note: this filepath does not exist by default. You have to create the “lua” and “extensions” folders in the “~/.local/share/vlc” folder)

cp vlsub.lua /usr/lib/vlc/lua/extensions/

  • For Windows, copy/paste the file to

%ProgramFiles%\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\

  • For Mac OS X:

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/extensions/                        

Step 3: Now, Play a video in VLC. Click on the view menu, you will see a “VLSub 0.9” Option, Click on that.

Step 4: In the VlSub window, select the language of the subtitle, and add the title of the movie and click on the “search by name” button. You will see all related subtitles from OpenSubtitles.org.

Step 5: Now click on any subtitle and highlight it and click on the “Download Selection.” It will prompt you select the location to download the subtitle file (the default location is the location of the currently playing video). Once that is done, you will be able to load the subtitle file in VLC.
